If you would like to give a different look to an old piece of furniture, don't be afraid to try out your skills and give "staining" a chance. It is a fairly easy project and it can be done in just a couple of days. Of course, you can do this kind of project with a real wood piece of furniture.
We had this coffee table we bought in a garage sale. It used to be black and we thought that a brown color, such as walnut, would suit our decor more than the black. We started stripping the table from top to bottom. The table came all apart, so that made our job a little easier. To start the job, we used the orange stripper that we also used when we did the cabinets for the living room. We stripped all the pieces. Once they were down to the bare wood, we cleaned the surfaces with Mineral Spirits. Remember to use gloves in all steps!!! This project can get very messy! After the cleaning, we let the furniture dry for a day and we sanded it lightly. After that is done, we picked the stain color we liked and with a bristle brush applied the first coat. Follow the product directions and let dry, and apply more coats if you like a darker finish. After the stain is dry, apply one or more coats of clear protective finish.
